10 hours agoWe are now up to 8 of our thirty-six 2025 captive-reared GLPIPLs reported on the wintering grounds! That's over 20%! Number 8 is X,L/O:Of,RN aka "LOReN". She was observed 10/1/2025 at Topsail Inlet, Pender county, NC by Kim Williams. Thorough genetic analysis of LOreN's eggshell we know she is female, which makes her extra critical for our current male-biased population. LOReN's egg came from a nest on North Manitou Island, which was rescued when the male went missing likely to Merlin predation. Fortunately, with phenomenal coordination efforts between Sleeping Bear Dunes NL, USFWS, UMN PIPL Field team, and the Detroit Zoo we were able to rescue the eggs of LOReN and her clutch mates just as they were about to hatch and transport them to our captive-rearing center. LOReN was released into the wild at Port Inland in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on July 10th. We are hoping LOReN took a liking to the Upper Peninsula and will return there in 2026 and meet a Yooper loving male Plover to nest with. Thank you to Kim Williams of Davey Resource Group, NC for sharing her important observation and photo! And a big thank you to the many individuals from Sleeping Bear Dunes NL, UMN Field team, USFWS, UMBS, the Detroit Zoo and zookeepers from various zoos that helped make LOReN a success story!
If you observe an orange flagged or banded piping plover send your photos and reports to plover@umn.edu.
